I put it to you that in the game Diplomacy there is no reason to attack France as Italy in the first 3 years of the game. It takes the focus from the real dangers that come from neighbouring Austria and Turkey.

The only reason would be a strong partnership with Austria (not too difficult early on with a smart Austria, who realises that the Balkans are more important (and speedy) growth areas than Italy. Also the only way of stopping Turkey &/or Russia growing too quickly). Given this, a good reason for attacking France is precisely it's surprise value (esp if combined with attacks from either England or Germany in order to flush out the pesky French fortress).
